As many of you know, I went to Long Beach to accept induction into the Order of Leviathan on behalf of Cockroach Blair, who was unable to attend. It was an amazing gathering of pirates, many of whom I consider good friends. I was so honored to be not only representing Cockroach, but witnessing the induction of many good friends, including Machete Betty, Gunpowder Gertie, Knotfist (even though people kept confusing us. You'd think Pirates would know their knots better! More on this later) and Luc the Lucky. Little did I know that there was a plot afoot to announce a surprise induction.
During the original round of nominations for induction I made the first cut of 50 nominees, but lost out when the final 25 were announced. It truly was an honor to even be nominated, and to have my name appear along with all the other worthy pirates who were nominated. When Cockroach sent me to Long Beach to accept his induction, it was with the understanding that it would be my opportunity to get my face and name in front of the movers and shakers in the order so I might have a better chance in the next round of inductions a couple of years from now.
When the American Spirit sailed and the induction "ceremony" began (shortly after Lycan was knocked out with a bottle to the back of the head), I stood by to accept Cockroach's medallion. When the time came, Spoo Diggity got confused (no, really. I hear it happens sometimes), and announced that Knotfist would accept for Cockroach. He was promptly corrected, but I kind of felt like my thunder had been stolen. Ah well, it was still a lovely cruise with wonderful friends, and I had been given a chance to meet the officers of the Order, so it was all good.
I went aft to show Daisy the medal, when suddenly I heard the crowd midship loudly calling my name. It seems a decision had been made to begin a tradition of inducting one pirate on the induction cruise who hadn't made the finals, and I was to be the first of these! I'm lead to believe this was due in no small part to extensive lobbying by many of the other inductees, , including (and especially) Cockroach! So that was why he'd asked me to attend in his stead! He knew all along that I was to be inducted! In my opinion it was an even higher honor to be inducted under these circumstances than it would have been to have made the final 25, because this felt more like recognition from my peers. SO much glory!
A big thank you to all those who have congratulated me so far, and to the crew at Mutiny Magazine for throwing such a great party. To Machete Betty and Logkeep for being our shipmates on the "Queen Mary's Revenge", and for treating me to an incredible breakfast brunch, and to all the worthy pirates who sailed with me during the induction cruise and congratulated me so heartily and made me feel like a peer.
My worthless crew is going to have to show a little respect now. Yeah, right.
